Today is International Overdose Awareness day. As of August 18th there\’s been 433 fatal overdoses in our province of British Columbia alone. If we go by those statistics, as of today, August 31st, another 24 overdoses have now taken place and about 257 fatal overdoses will occur by the end of this year.

When my parents found out that I smoked cannabis as a teen, my dad sat me down and told me in all seriousness that marijuana would be the gateway to harder drugs like heroin, cocaine and so on. At the time I thought he and his \”gateway\” theory was just crazy talk.
Now though, it looks like we\’re the ones that may have to sit our loved ones down and have the \”gateway\” talk about the possibility that prescription painkiller addiction leads to heroin abuse. I\’m not kidding. It\’s all over the news.
The face of the opioid addict is rapidly changing these days as people are getting addicted to opioids through the legal version, then moving to the illegal version because it\’s easier to obtain. Opiates and heroin are really moving to the suburbs and affecting groups of people there.

Opioid overdose will kill 800 people in B.C. this year if the death toll continues at its current rate. In the first three months of 2016, fentanyl was detected in half of 200 opioid-overdose deaths. Fentanyl is indiscriminately killing entrenched street users and casual users from the suburbs.

The War on Drugs is killing innocent people. We have seen a dramatic increase of opioid related deaths from Fentanyl in Western Canada. Last year alone there were over 400 Fentanyl-related deaths here.
